Damian Hall - Alumni Spotlight

Jeremy Alves | Feb 11, 2016

Since graduating from OIART’s audio and music production course in 2002, Damian Hall has been busy working in the Jamaican music industry as a record producer, recording and mixing engineer. Damian started out as the in-house Engineer for superstar Shaggy’s Big Yard Recording Studio in Jamaica. From there he started his own production and record label (Ballaz Productions) while also freelancing as a mix engineer. Added to his many caps is also the role of artist manager as he manages Road Elf, a Jamaican Dancehall artist.

Damian and his partner Nigel Whitfield produced the French Dancehall hit “Hey Sexy Wow” (performed by Lord Kossity and Chico for Universal Records) which peaked at #3 on the Airplay World Official Top 100 chart in September 2005. His cedits include: Universal Records (France), Shaggy, Beres Hammond, Buju Banton, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Vybz Kartel, Elephant Man, Lady Saw, Luciano, Gyptian, Busy Signal, Barrington Levy, Tanto Metro and Devonte, Mr. Vegas, and Sly and Robbie to name a few.

“I got everything I needed to build a strong foundation from OIART. I learnt all the principles of recording and mixing and that is what is important. Gain staging and signal flow are some of the fundamentals. Once you understand the principles, they can be applied to any audio environment. Practical classes gave us real world hands on experience and we did a lot of those. I remember there was a practical to go with every theory class… Hats off to OIART!!”

Hats off to Damian!
