Our Curriculum Includes:

Recording Technology

This course deconstructs all the elements of professional recording studios to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of both digital and analog recording technology.  Using various microphones, consoles, effects, and understanding the signal flow between them all will become like second nature. With a solid blend of theory and hands-on learning you’ll get to know the gear inside and out, and you’ll have lots of time to hone your skills on your own projects. 

Live Sound & Event Production

Understand what’s behind the scenes in the challenging environments presented by small clubs, outdoor festivals and concert stadiums. You’ll learn the techniques required to manage live sound in a variety of settings, from relatively straightforward podium work to concert gigs. This course also includes lessons in cable architecture, grounding topologies, safety, troubleshooting, and navigating union regulations.

Acoustics

Industry professionals recognize the impact of room design on the sound they produce - that’s why modifying, designing, and constructing acoustic spaces is central to the studies of this course.” You’ll investigate the physical nature and behaviour of sound until you can predict, design, analyze and modify environments to get that specific acoustic result.

Pro Tools

From day one through to graduation you’ll be fully immersed in Pro ToolsTM projects, eventually achieving a level of skill and confidence that will fully meet the demands expected of sound professionals.

Computer Management

You already know that your computer is central to modern music production. With this course you’ll be making the most of industry standard software, hardware and networking tools. Know what to buy, when to upgrade, how to troubleshoot and how to maximize performance.

Digital Theory Essentials

Vinyl? MP3s? Analog Synths? Software plugins? What does it mean to move from analog to digital - and back again? More importantly, what does it sound like? You’ll explore the complex relationship between analog and digital audio and the challenges with conversion. This is essential theory that every sound professional needs to know.

Music Production

This course will build on knowledge of studio techniques and tools by exploring the creative and artistic approaches to music production. Master the art of capturing a song while learning the production techniques necessary to achieve your ideal sound. In addition to learning and practicing recording and mixing techniques for various instruments and genres, you’ll develop the delicate interpersonal skills required when working with artists and their songs. You’ll produce your own projects, and observe & participate in the production practices of our faculty and guest faculty.  

Music Theory

Painlessly glide into a deeper understanding of music with this short and fascinating look at the materials and concepts behind the sounds you love. You’ll learn how music works, and will cover chord structures, harmony, meter, rhythm as well as the fundamentals of its verbal and symbolic vocabulary. Our seasoned studio veterans have designed this component specifically for recording artists, engineers, and producers.

Audio Mathematics

This one semester refresher course reintroduces the mathematical concepts and terminologies that are crucial for the Recording Technology, Pro ToolsTM, Acoustics and Live Sound segments. After this, you’ll confidently be discussing s/n ratios, the Decibel, Ohm’s Law, resonant modes and much more. 

Sound Design

The video game, film and music industries are always searching for sounds the world has never heard before. After exploring Psychoacoustics – the science of sound perception – you’ll learn how to use the most up-to-date tools to master the art of storytelling with sound, under the guidance of our Gemini award-winning sound design instructor.

Audio for Pictures and Video Games

Sound effects, dialog, foley, music – these audio elements have a significant impact on films, TV, and video games. From on-set location recording to post-production in the studio, you’ll learn the tools, skills and vocabulary needed to record, edit, and mix a soundscape that will keep the audience on the edge of its seat. Through lab support, term projects and the analysis of films in our 5:1 surround sound screening room, you’ll get the experience required for various jobs in the industry.

Career Management

Your new career will require planning and management and you’ll need insight on how today’s industry works. With 30 years experience of successfully placing grads, we’re able to show you how to turn your passion for sound into a successful and fulfilling career. During this course, our faculty and guest instructors will share their experiences about how the industry really works, what employers expect from you, and how to establish goals and seek out the right opportunities. We will work with you to establish you’re plans for post-graduation, and provide you with lifelong career support as you join the OIART global alumni network of successful audio pros.
