Ryan Castle - Alumni Spotlight

Jeremy Alves | Jan 07, 2016

Ryan Castle ’98 is an engineer, mixer and editor based in Los Angeles California. After graduating from OIART’s music and audio production course, Ryan found great success in the music industry. He has won two Grammy Awards for his work on the “Best Hard Rock Recording” by Wolfmother in 2007 and the 2002 “Best Female Rock Performance” by Sheryl Crow. Ryan’s music client list reads like a who’s who of rock royalty – The Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, Black Sabbath, OASIS, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Death From Above 1979, Jet, Band of Horses and Elliott Smith to name a few. He has recently successfully transitioned into the motion picture industry, and worked as the music editor on the just-released Mark Wahlberg / Will Farrell feature movie, “Daddy’s Home.”

Ryan is humble about his work and is reluctant to call attention to himself, yet he says, there were “still occasional opportunities to be a little star-struck… one situation comes to mind. Sitting next to Paul McCartney in Capitol’s Studio B, or watching Zak Starkey lay down a drum track on an Oasis record was a little spooky as one could imagine. Zak looks eerily like his dad (Ringo) playing drums out there in the big room. While working some Saturdays at Capitol, when the building was vacant except for our crew, I’d walk around the darkened studio floors during a break and think…where are all my witnesses to this? Nobody would believe what I get to do for a day job! I mean, I’m just kicking around unsupervised inside Capitol with no one else around but the ghosts of Frank (Sinatra). Those days are the coolest…a reminder of what the rest of the work is for.”
