Learning by Doing

Practical studio experience is OIART’s founding principle and guiding philosophy. To support this, all labs and recording sessions are completed in our extensive on-site facilities, including: six on-site professionally equipped, multi-track recording studios; an acoustics research lab; a video screening and gaming lab; a live sound lab and numerous computer-based audio production workstations. You will gain experience with a wide variety of gear — from legendary to leading edge — preparing you for the full historical range of equipment currently in use throughout the professional audio industry.

OIART’s intensive curriculum emphasizes frequent, supervised lab training in small groups of no more than four students. For every hour of classroom instruction, you’ll participate in an hour of lab time, logging more than 600 hours of studio experience during your year-long program.

Spending this much hands-on time with the kind of audio gear found in real-world studios gives you a degree of experience — and a portfolio — that would take two to three years in less-focused programs.
