Pro Tools™
Computer based 'virtual studios' have become a working standard
throughout professional audio industry settings and continue to
reinvent audio workflow patterns throughout the film, music, videogaming
and broadcast industries. The center-piece for such a studio is
inevitably a hard-disc based recorder/editor, more often than
not Pro Tools™ by Digidesign™. We immerse our students
in this world with a variety of Pro Tools systems, represented
in nearly all of our studios. Two studios in particular have
been designed around Pro Tools HD systems that include the Digidesign/Focusrite
Control 24 control surface, both 192 and 96 I/O interfaces, and
5.1 surround speaker systems. Pro Tools LE systems are
represented in at least four other studios, and an additional
eight stations are used for weekly practical labs, offering students
individual time to observe concepts.
OIART has been training students in Audio Applications
of Digital Technology since 1987 and we're particularly aware
of the broad historical context and future impact of computer-based
audio. Members of our faculty were the first to be certified as
Pro Tools™ instructors in Canada, beta-tested the original
Pro Tools courseware and authored sections of the course manual.
This depth of experience has produced dramatic results in lab
and curricula development that very quickly and very successfully
trains our students for professional computer audio environments.
OIART graduates are competent and accomplished with both Pro Tools
and Samplitude systems, and achieve skill levels that are measurably
superior to those reached by taking the manufacture's training
courses alone. Grads know the software, the hardware and just
as significantly, precisely how it is applied in a wide variety
of professional settings!
The practical component of this course provides
complete and well-rounded training with professional-level digital
audio workstations for both Mac and Windows computers. This training
begins immediately and is sustained throughout the entire program
in both large control room/studio settings as well as workstation
environments. Additional lectures will also include a full range
of digital devices common to the virtual studio's technical context
such as:
- software signal processors
- software recorder/editors
- software synthesizers
- samplers
- digital consoles/control surfaces
- digital (hardware) multitrack recorders
- digital (hardware) effects processors
- DAT
- CD-recordables
- DVD
PTLS and its Practical Lab support (PPRAC) is extensively
integrated with and reinforced by the Desktop Production, Recording
Technology, Audio for Pictures and Computer Management in Audio
Environments courses.
