Studio 6
Professional level desktop audio production facilities have come of age, and Studio 6 reflects current industry practice in the design of this type of computer-based virtual studio. A logical extension of the MIDI Project Studios that emerged in the 1990's, these desktop audio settings have rapidly become successful competitors to larger audio production environments. Despite the simplicity of their appearance, new software and computer capabilities allow a level of productivity matching and often surpassing that of professional studios from earlier decades.

Desktop Production Studios are a cost effective and qualitatively viable alternative to other types of studios and as such, have a very strong appeal to musicians, composers, sound designers, educators and smaller media businesses that could use in-house audio production capabilities. Knowing and understanding the types of hardware and software used in such environments has become a necessity for successfully establishing and/or operating this type of facility, as well as achieving high quality results.

A key element in desktop production remains Midi controllable synthesizers and software sequencers - the central production tools of most modern sound shaping environments. The cost-effective acoustic control is centered on the semi-anechoic isolation chamber, reflecting a genuine representation of most project studio and desktop audio settings.

The technology in this room shifts on a regular basis to keep current with the rapidly changing CPU based host machines, but at the moment includes a Mac G5, Pro Tools 002 with DV toolkit, Evolution UC33 MIDI controller, Denon turntable, Yamaha and Roland MIDI Keyboards and MIDI tone generators by Roland and Alesis. The current software compliment includes Pro Tools, Absynth and Reason. Monitoring is through HHB Circle 5 Active Monitors. The local area network also makes file sharing, storage and high speed internet connectivity possible.

This studio provides lab support for the Digital Theory, Pro Tools and Sound Design courses. In this studio skills such as MIDI sequencing, sampling, synthesis, sound design, radio spot production, MIDI time code synchronization, and MIDI automation are developed.
