Studio 3
This is our main Recording Technology lecture studio. Theatre-style
seating overlooks an extraordinary 'exploded-view' studio where
all interconnections between equipment remain visible. A video
camera feed to a Sony video/data projector allows the instructor
to project large images of minute surface details for every piece
of equipment and cabling under discussion. Glass fronts on the
two isolation booths flanking the projection wall allow excellent
views of the recording techniques being demonstrated. Large acoustically
designed baffles allow the room to make a transition from the
130m2 (1400 sq. ft.) lecture theatre to a controlled monitoring
environment for lab use. This classroom is equipped with a headphone
distribution system that provides headphone monitoring for every
desk.

Current equipment includes (but isn't limited to)
a Westar 32 channel mixing console, 24 track Studer A80 mkIV analogue
tape machine, 3 Tascam DA88 digital tape machines, Tascam DAT,
Fostex, Yamaha, and Aurotone monitors, outboard processors by
Urei, DigiTech, Lexicon, and Alesis, and a Pro Tools 002 system.
This studio is connected to the LAN and central storage server,
accessing the internet via a high speed DSL connection.
This lecture theatre extensively supports two core
courses: Recording Technology and the career profile segment of
the Career Management course. This unique environment serves as
both lecture theatre for larger groups as well as labs for more
individualized settings. Everything demonstrated in this environment
during Recording Technology class signal flow, mixing, signal
processing, synchronization, console automation, microphone technique,
and instrument recording occurs in-situ during labs. Students
use the same technology utilized in faculty demonstration, allowing
swift assimilation of practical tactics and skills.
