Studio 2
This control room accurately represents contemporary room-design philosophies typical of the world's finest recording, critical-listening and mixing studios. The floating-floor, Reflection Free Zone (RFZ) control room's unique surface geometries were built using L.E.D.E.™ (Live End Dead End) and RPG™ acoustic design concepts to construct the RFZ monitoring environment. The control room is 36m2 (390 sq. ft.), while the accompanying multi-surfaced recording floor is 74m2 (800 sq. ft.). The room was designed to provide 24 track hard disk recording and playback capability.

Currently the room is replete with industry-standard technology and authentically typifies the union of professional audio hardware with computer-based virtual studios. The equipment complement currently includes a Mitsubishi 24 channel analogue console, microphone pre-amps by Neve and Focusrite, Yamaha and Tannoy monitors, a RADAR 24 hard disk recording system, a Pro Tools 002 system, Sony APR-24 Analog Multitrack, Tascam DAT, HHB CD-R recorder, and outboard processors by Neve, SSL, Eventide, Focusrite, Bellari, Urei, Lexicon, DigiTech, and Yamaha.

Our microphone selection migrates throughout the studio complex as needed, but the majority reside in the mic park of the large (800 sq. ft.) recording floor of Studio 2. There are typically dozens of mics available from such noted manufacturers as Neumann, Sennheiser, AKG, Earthworks, Rode, Royer, Audio Technica, Beyer Dynamic, and Electro Voice. This studio is also fully networked with the other studios and accesses the internet via a high speed DSL connection.

Studio 2 provides intensive lab support for the majority of the principles discussed and demonstrated in the Recording Technology course and definitively illustrates room design concepts thoroughly discussed in the Acoustics course. Labs begin within the first few weeks of the school year, with the room supporting skill development in analogue and hard-disk recording and editing, music instrument recording, radio spot production, mixing, signal processing, and console automation. The student internship recording and mixing sessions occur in this studio.
