AR Lab
This is our unique Acoustic Research Lab and Surround-Sound
screening studio. It is designed to represent monitoring
environments typical of high-end audiophile home theatre systems
and settings. All the acoustic treatment in the room is completely
modular and removable. This room is also used for screening movies
and video game play in full 5.1 surround, providing support for
the Audio for Pictures and Sound Design courses.

As of this writing,
the technology includes a 60" Stewart Lexus Deluxe Firehawk G3
screen, Epson PowerLite Pro Cinema 1080UB
HD projector, Pioneer Elite receiver, B&W surround sound
system with Tannoy bipole rear speakers,
Blu Ray DVD player, Sony PS3, Microsoft
Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, modular passive
acoustic treatment, and Helmholtz active
low frequency absorbers.
Using ETF™ acoustics analysis software, this
room allows students to perform complex room analysis and subsequently
implement treatment based on the results. This room is designed
to possess and illustrate the most common acoustic anomalies present
in standard home theatre environments. Acoustic phenomena such
as resonant modes, flutter echo, comb filtering, and speaker boundary
interference can be demonstrated. Practical support of the Acoustics
course allows for a thorough grasp and understanding of the concepts
and challenges facing the design and treatment of critical listening
environments.
